On April 9, 2026, OpenAI introduced a new $100 per month Pro plan for ChatGPT, positioning it between the existing $20 Plus and $200 Pro tiers. This new offering directly targets Anthropic’s Claude Max, which shares the same monthly price point. The plan grants five times the Codex usage of the Plus plan and provides access to the identical model suite found in the $200 tier. As a launch promotion, subscribers will temporarily receive ten times the Codex usage of Plus until May 31, 2026. This strategic move follows Codex surpassing three million weekly users on April 8, with OpenAI reporting a fivefold increase in its growth rate over the past three months.
The new $100 Pro plan represents the sixth tier in ChatGPT’s updated pricing framework, which now spans from a free, ad-supported account, an $8/month Go plan, the $20/month Plus plan, two Pro versions at $100 and $200/month, a $25/user/month Business plan, and custom Enterprise contracts. This $100 Pro tier is positioned directly between the Plus and the existing $200 Pro plans, offering five times the Codex usage of the Plus plan. It's designed to cater to "longer, high-effort Codex sessions" where Plus subscribers previously faced limitations. For comparison, the $200 Pro plan provides 20 times the Codex usage of Plus, making it four times more intensive than the new $100 tier.
Importantly, both Pro tiers offer access to an identical model suite: the exclusive GPT-5.4 Pro model, unlimited usage of GPT-5.4 Instant and GPT-5.4 Thinking, and all other features available with the $200 plan. The primary distinction between these two tiers is usage volume, not underlying capability. As a launch incentive, new $100 plan subscribers will enjoy ten times the Codex usage of Plus until May 31, 2026, after which the standard five-times limit will be applied. Concurrently, OpenAI is rebalancing the Plus plan's Codex allocation, optimizing it for consistent day-to-day use rather than the extended, high-burst sessions the new $100 plan is designed to accommodate.
The impetus for the new tier stems from significant Codex demand. On April 8, 2026, a day prior to the $100 plan announcement, Sam Altman posted on X that OpenAI was resetting Codex’s usage limits across all plans to "celebrate 3M weekly codex users." He further committed to repeating this reset for every additional million users until Codex reaches ten million weekly users. Thibault Sottiaux, head of the Codex product, confirmed: "Three million people are now using Codex weekly, up from two million a little under a month ago." OpenAI highlighted this growth trajectory as a fivefold increase in the preceding three months, with a remarkable 70% month-over-month user growth.
