Meta plans to cut 10% of its workforce on Wednesday, attempting to provide clarity to employees stuck in layoff limbo. The tech giant shared more details on Monday regarding the upcoming restructuring and organizational changes.
Meta HR chief Janelle Gale posted a memo to an employee resource group outlining the logistics, according to two employees who viewed the note. Gale stated that notifications for the layoffs, expected to eliminate approximately 8,000 roles, will be sent in three waves starting at 4 a.m. local time across different regions.
Gale emphasized that managerial positions would be cut across the company to facilitate flatter organizational structures. "We're now at the stage where many orgs can operate with a flatter structure with smaller teams of pods/cohorts that can move faster and with more ownership," she wrote in the memo. This structural shift aims to increase operational efficiency and speed.
In a strategic pivot, Meta will move more than 7,000 personnel to work on new AI initiatives. These projects are deemed crucial to Meta's future success but were previously not prioritized due to resource constraints. Leaders across the company are expected to announce these organizational changes alongside the layoff notifications. Some teams within Meta's Reality Labs had already begun reorganizing into these smaller pod units.
The update arrives as internal morale has taken a significant hit, with employees describing a "holding pattern" while waiting for job finality. Meta is currently spending billions in the global AI race, forecasting its 2026 capital expenditures to range between $125 billion and $145 billion. Company leaders have also informed staff that further job cuts beyond this Wednesday’s 10% round are not being ruled out.
