Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Launches Payments for AI Agents, Partnering with Coinbase and Stripe

We are witnessing a fundamental shift in how software is built and utilized. AI agents are evolving beyond simple assistants awaiting instructions; they now actively call APIs, access MCP servers, coordinate with other agents, and execute complex multi-step tasks on behalf of users. As agents undertake increasingly diverse responsibilities, the surrounding ecosystem is rapidly expanding to meet this growing demand.

Looking ahead, services, tools, and content must be designed to accommodate both humans and agents. Agents will autonomously discover, evaluate, and pay for resources as needed, all within a single execution loop. The services supporting them must be priced and consumed in this manner: fractions of a cent per call, billed in real-time. Pioneering protocols like x402, ACP, MPP, and AP2 are demonstrating what this looks like, and various teams are experimenting with payment-enabled agents. While the foundational building blocks are emerging, the agentic economy remains in its nascent stages, lacking the comprehensive infrastructure required for scalable support. For developers aiming to innovate in this space, the path has been challenging, involving the setup of bespoke billing relationships with each service provider, secure credential management, enforcement of spending governance, navigation of compliance requirements, and the intricate orchestration logic across a fragmented landscape. This represents months of engineering effort, with high stakes: a misconfigured payment flow doesn't just yield an incorrect answer; it involves real financial transactions.

Today, we are announcing Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Payments (preview), a new suite of features within Amazon Bedrock AgentCore designed to enable AI agents to instantly access and pay for resources such as web content, APIs, MCP servers, and other agents. These capabilities have been developed in partnership with Coinbase and Stripe, who are providing the essential wallet infrastructure and payment rails that power this initial set of features.

AgentCore serves as the platform for building, connecting, and optimizing agents at scale, with robust security enforced at the infrastructure layer, which agents cannot bypass. Developers from prominent companies like Cox Automotive, Thomson Reuters, and PGA TOUR already leverage AgentCore to construct agents that can reason, plan, and act across complex workflows. With today’s announcement, these agents can now also transact, utilizing the same identity system, agent gateway, and observability tools they already rely on. Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Payments is not an add-on module; it is natively integrated into the platform where agents are built, governed by the same controls that manage every other action the agent performs.

This marks the introduction of the first managed end-to-end payment capabilities specifically engineered for autonomous agents. These capabilities span the full lifecycle from wallet authentication and transaction execution to spending governance and observability, empowering developers to concentrate on their agents' core functions rather than managing complex payment logistics.
