At its annual Google I/O 2026 event on Tuesday, Google announced that the Gemini app is receiving a series of major updates, including a “Daily Brief” feature, a redesigned interface, a new AI video model called Gemini Omni, and a new personal AI agent named Gemini Spark. These updates signal Google’s push to transform the Gemini app into an all-purpose AI hub rather than a standalone chatbot, making the assistant more competitive against rivals like ChatGPT and Claude.
The new Daily Brief feature is described as a personalized digest designed to be a user's first stop each morning. It aggregates information from a user’s inbox, calendar, and most important tasks, organizing them into a clear overview. Notably, Daily Brief doesn’t just summarize—it prioritizes tasks and suggests next steps, showing the most critical items first. It is rolling out today to Google AI subscribers in the United States.
Google revealed that Gemini currently serves over 900 million monthly users across 230 countries and 70+ languages. To cater to this massive base, the app was rebuilt from the ground up with a new design language called “Neural Expressive.” This UI brings fluid animations, vibrant colors, new typography, and haptic feedback. Gemini’s responses have moved away from dense blocks of text; instead, key information is bolded at the top, with images and timelines appearing as the user scrolls.
A highlight of the event is Gemini Spark, a 24/7 personal AI agent designed to navigate digital life. Spark transforms Gemini from a passive assistant into an active partner that performs real work on the user's behalf. As a cloud-based agent, Spark keeps working in the background even when the phone is locked. Users can create custom workflows within the app using this technology. Spark is currently in testing and will be available to Google AI Ultra subscribers next week.
Finally, Google introduced Gemini Omni, a new AI video model that combines Gemini with generative media capabilities to create grounded outputs. For instance, users can provide prompts like “claymation explainer of protein folding” along with audio, images, or video to generate high-quality, consistent video content. Gemini Omni is rolling out to Google Flow and YouTube Shorts for subscribers, intensifying the race for leadership in multimodal content generation.
