Google Launches Android CLI 1.0 to Power Agentic App Development

At its annual Google I/O developer conference, Google announced that its Android CLI (command line interface) has reached stable version 1.0. The release is specifically designed to allow AI agents—including Claude Code, OpenAI’s Codex, and Google’s own Antigravity or Gemini—to significantly accelerate the Android app development process.

This move serves as an acknowledgement that a growing number of developers are building for Android using AI agents from diverse providers. Google is now working to make its specialized platform knowledge, traditionally housed within the Android Studio IDE, more accessible to these autonomous tools regardless of the developer's preferred environment.

Through the Android CLI, AI agents can now retrieve deep development insights via a new “android studio” command. This allows agents to tap into the core capabilities of Android Studio while building their projects, granting them access to a wide array of specialized commands and internal tools.

Furthermore, Google’s agentic development platform, Antigravity, will offer an optional bundle to install the Android CLI toolset. According to Google, this integration ensures that the platform can perform the essential tasks of Android app development natively, leveraging the full specialized knowledge base provided by the new CLI.
