Apple to Revamp AirPods Control and Settings in Future iOS Update

AirPods are widely considered one of the best options for personal audio, offering high sound quality and a feature set so robust they are starting to absorb tasks that previously required a screened device. However, this growing complexity necessitates more granular controls, and the existing AirPods interface leaves much to be desired.

A new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests that Apple has recognized these user frustrations. According to Gurman, with the release of a future iOS update (noted as iOS 27 in the report) and its corresponding updates for Mac and iPad, Apple is "revamping the AirPods settings menu to be more functional."

Crucially, the report clarifies that AirPods will not be receiving a dedicated standalone app similar to the one used for the Apple Watch. While the exact technical details of the update remain under wraps, current user pain points are well-known. The firmware update process, for instance, is currently ambiguous and lacks a manual "scan and install" feature. Additionally, battery status indicators are often obscure and inconsistent across different use cases.

Gurman’s sources indicate that "major feature options" will be better highlighted in the updated software. This overhaul aims to streamline navigation and ensure that the most important settings are easily accessible to the user, moving away from the current cluttered and sometimes confusing settings layout.
