OpenAI has announced a significant achievement, reaching a critical milestone in securing artificial intelligence (AI) compute capacity in the United States years ahead of schedule. This accomplishment is set to fuel the company's ambitious data center expansion plans.
In a recent disclosure, the AI pioneer revealed it has signed contracts for a total of 10 gigawatts (GW) of AI compute power. This milestone was originally targeted for 2029, making its current attainment a notable acceleration. Furthermore, 3 GW of this contracted capacity has been secured within just the past 90 days, including a substantial 2 GW contribution from tech giant Amazon.
This rapid acquisition of compute resources underscores OpenAI's aggressive strategy to build out its AI infrastructure. To put the scale into perspective, 1 GW of electricity is roughly sufficient to power approximately 750,000 U.S. homes simultaneously. This strategic move is expected to bolster OpenAI's leading position in AI research and deployment, providing ample resources for future model training and accelerating the path toward advanced AI capabilities.
