The Dutch government has officially launched its dedicated open-source code hosting platform, code.overheid.nl. This initiative represents a significant step forward in the nation's digital infrastructure development and government IT modernization efforts.
The platform is built upon Forgejo, an open-source project forked from Gitea. Forgejo functions as a Git software development and version control platform, offering capabilities highly similar to GitHub. It integrates essential project management features, including robust bug tracking, collaborative Wiki documentation, and comprehensive code review processes, designed to provide government developers with an efficient and secure collaborative environment.
code.overheid.nl is hosted entirely within the Dutch government's own digital infrastructure, ensuring data security and sovereignty. Furthermore, the platform will be made available free of charge to all government agencies across the Netherlands, facilitating the sharing of code resources and fostering inter-departmental collaboration. The Dutch government emphasized that this launch is a crucial component of its broader strategy to strengthen national digital sovereignty, aiming to reduce reliance on external commercial services and enhance its self-sufficiency and control over digital assets.
