OpenAI Brings ChatGPT's Voice Mode to Apple CarPlay

OpenAI has announced the integration of ChatGPT's Voice mode with Apple CarPlay, offering users a new AI interaction experience directly from their vehicles. This feature is now accessible to users running the latest versions of iOS and the ChatGPT app, provided they have a CarPlay-compatible vehicle.

To begin, users need to ensure all necessary software is updated, connect their iPhone to CarPlay, and select "New voice chat" within the ChatGPT application. A conversation can then commence once the in-app text indicates ChatGPT is "listening."

However, there are notable limitations to using ChatGPT Voice through CarPlay. The chatbot currently cannot control vehicle functions; tasks such as adjusting cabin temperature or skipping music tracks still require Siri. Furthermore, due to Apple's platform restrictions, users cannot initiate ChatGPT with a wake word, unlike Siri. Resuming a previous conversation requires opening the ChatGPT app from CarPlay and manually selecting a recent or pinned chat.

Despite these constraints, OpenAI suggests that the Voice mode can be effectively utilized for various purposes, including obtaining how-to advice, brainstorming ideas, and practicing languages. This offers a new avenue for hands-free information retrieval and interactive communication while driving.
