Microsoft Developing OpenClaw-like AI Agent for Enhanced Enterprise 365 Copilot with Potential Local Capabilities

Microsoft Developing OpenClaw-like AI Agent for Enhanced Enterprise 365 Copilot with Potential Local Capabilities

Microsoft is actively exploring the integration of OpenClaw-like features into its existing Microsoft 365 Copilot tool. These new functionalities, confirmed by the company to The Information, are primarily targeted at enterprise customers, offering enhanced security controls compared to the open-source OpenClaw agent.

OpenClaw is a tool designed to run locally on a user's computer, enabling the creation of AI agents to perform tasks on their behalf. Should Microsoft release its own "Claw" version – specifically, an agent with local execution capabilities – it would augment the array of agentic tools the company has introduced recently.

For example, in March, Microsoft unveiled Copilot Cowork, engineered to execute actions directly within Microsoft 365 applications, moving beyond mere search results or chat interactions in a separate pane. Cowork leverages Microsoft's proprietary "Work IQ" technology, an intelligence layer designed to personalize the Copilot Cowork experience for users across Microsoft 365 apps.

Following its partnership with Anthropic late last year, Microsoft has integrated Anthropic's Claude to power Cowork, making it an available option. While OpenClaw is compatible with various models, Claude remains a preferred choice for many users of the open-source project. Crucially, unlike a potential local "Claw," Cowork itself operates in the cloud, not on local hardware.

In February, Microsoft also introduced Copilot Tasks, another agent designed for task completion, released in preview at the time. Marketing materials suggested this agent was aimed more at prosumers than enterprises, capable of handling diverse tasks from email organization (a Microsoft 365-like function) to travel and appointment management (tasks outside the Microsoft Office suite). Like Cowork, Copilot Tasks also runs in the cloud.

It remains unclear whether this new "Claw" agent will operate locally or merely adopt other beloved features of OpenClaw. However, Microsoft informed The Information that a key characteristic of this agent would be its continuous operation, essentially an "always-on" version of 365 Copilot capable of taking actions at any time. The underlying concept is an agent that can execute multi-step tasks over extended durations.

Although the open-source OpenClaw project can run on Windows machines, the Mac Mini has emerged as the preferred platform for its users, driving a notable surge in sales for the compact desktops. This suggests Microsoft's motivations for developing its own version extend beyond just security enhancements, encompassing various strategic considerations.

The Verge reports that Microsoft is anticipated to unveil this new "Claw" agent, or an upgraded iteration of one of its existing Claw-like tools, at its Microsoft Build conference in June. Microsoft declined to provide specific details regarding this new agent, including how it compares to previously announced agents.
