Meta announced its first major AI model, Muse Spark, on Wednesday. This marks a significant milestone since CEO Mark Zuckerberg rebooted the company’s AI efforts last year under the new Meta Intelligence Labs division. Meta states that Muse Spark is a step towards Zuckerberg’s vision of “personal superintelligence,” and for now, it will remain closed source.
In a social media post, Zuckerberg articulated Meta’s goal to build AI products that “don't just answer your questions but act as agents that do things for you.” He expressed optimism that this initiative would support a wave of creativity, entrepreneurship, growth, and health.
Muse Spark appears to be a major upgrade over Meta’s previous large release, Llama 4, which debuted in April 2025 and was largely viewed as a disappointment in the tech industry due to its middling performance.
Meta is making Muse Spark available via meta.ai and through the Meta AI app. Unlike the Llama series, Muse Spark is not being released for external download, though the company hopes to open-source future versions. Meta was historically a leader in open-source AI, making its Llama models accessible for researchers, startups, and hobbyists.
Zuckerberg affirmed, “Looking ahead, we plan to release increasingly advanced models that push the frontier of intelligence and capabilities, including new open source models.”
Meta’s self-reported benchmark scores for Muse Spark suggest it outperforms the latest models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and xAI in certain tasks. In a blog post, Meta referred to Muse Spark as “the first step on our scaling ladder,” reiterating its ambition to build AI that far outstrips human abilities.
Artificial Analysis, an AI benchmarking company with early access to Muse Spark, stated on social media that the new model is among the best it has tested. The company reported that Muse Spark scored 52 on its "Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index," placing it within the top 5 models benchmarked, using a rubric that integrates various third-party benchmarks.
Meta highlights Muse Spark's native multimodal capabilities, meaning it has been trained to process images, audio, video, and text. The model also features advanced reasoning capabilities—a hallmark of today’s top AI models—and was built from scratch with strong coding abilities. Meta described these features as foundational for developing increasingly capable models using modern machine-learning methods.
Notably, Meta engineered Muse Spark to excel in providing medical advice. “To improve Muse Spark's health reasoning capabilities, we collaborated with over 1,000 physicians to curate training data that enables more factual and comprehensive responses,” the company detailed in its blog post.
Since Llama 4's release, Zuckerberg has significantly invested in overhauling Meta’s artificial intelligence efforts.
