Meta AI App Climbs to No. 5 on US App Store Following Muse Spark Launch, Highlighting New AI Model's Impact

Meta's AI app has experienced a substantial surge in installations, climbing to No. 5 on the U.S. App Store following the recent launch of Muse Spark, the company's newest AI model. Market intelligence firm Appfigures reported that the app jumped from No. 57 just before Wednesday's Muse Spark release to No. 5 by Thursday, indicating a significant influx of new users.

Muse Spark marks the first AI model released under Alexandr Wang, head of Meta’s Superintelligence Labs. Wang, recruited from Scale AI last year, is tasked with overhauling Meta's AI initiatives. Another intelligence firm, Sensor Tower, estimated Meta AI saw approximately 46,000 U.S. iOS app downloads on April 8, 2026, an 87% increase day-over-day. U.S. Android downloads for Meta AI also rose, albeit by a more modest 3% day-over-day on the same date.

Meta states that Muse Spark, available on both web and mobile, represents a significant upgrade from its earlier Llama 4 models. This launch is Meta's latest strategic move to close the gap with rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic, an endeavor that has already involved billions in AI talent recruitment and a $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI.

Currently, Muse Spark supports multimodal input, encompassing voice, text, and images. It is designed for robust performance across various tasks, including health learning, complex reasoning in scientific and mathematical domains, and visual coding—allowing users to generate websites and mini-games from prompts. Furthermore, Meta confirmed that its AI is capable of deploying multiple subagents to address user queries effectively.

The new model is slated for broader rollout across Meta's other platforms, including WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, and Meta’s AI glasses, in the coming weeks. Coinciding with the model's debut, the Meta AI mobile app and website have been enhanced with a refreshed user interface, enabling users to seamlessly switch between modes based on their task requirements.

Despite this recent growth, Meta AI's app still trails behind leading AI chatbots from competitors, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT (No. 1), Anthropic’s Claude (No. 2), and Google’s Gemini (No. 3). Alexandr Wang acknowledged the app's new high rank in an X post earlier Thursday, noting its continued growth trajectory.

Appfigures data indicates that Meta AI’s app has accumulated a total of 60.5 million worldwide installations across both App Store and Google Play, with 25 million downloads occurring this year alone. Over the past five months, Meta AI app downloads have surged by 138% compared to the app’s initial five months of availability. India now stands as Meta AI’s largest market by downloads, followed by the U.S., Brazil, Pakistan, and Mexico.

Beyond app stores, Sensor Tower’s data revealed that daily web visitors for Meta AI in the U.S. increased by over 450% day-over-day, reaching an all-time high on April 8, 2026.
