James Manyika, a Senior Vice President at Google-Alphabet and a veteran AI researcher, has challenged the prevailing narrative in Silicon Valley regarding an "AI jobs apocalypse." Speaking on Casey Newton’s "Platformer" podcast released on Tuesday, Manyika expressed deep skepticism toward extreme predictions of near-term mass unemployment driven by artificial intelligence.
During the interview, Newton referenced Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s previous warnings of an impending spike in unemployment due to technological shifts. Manyika responded directly, stating, "I'll just say: let's take the bet." He pointed out that similar dire forecasts made two years ago—predicting that 50% of jobs would be wiped out within that timeframe—have failed to materialize as the two-year mark has passed.
According to Manyika, the impact of AI on the labor market will be threefold: it will eliminate some roles, create entirely new ones, and fundamentally transform a significant majority of existing jobs. His comments align him with a growing segment of tech leadership pushing back against widespread public anxiety. Manyika argues that while AI will certainly reshape the global workforce, the vision of a total employment collapse remains an overstated fear.
