Eight years after its acquisition by Microsoft, GitHub is facing what many describe as an existential crisis. The world’s largest code hosting platform has been plagued by persistent downtime and critical security lapses. Most notably, a malicious library extension installed on an employee's VS Code instance led to the theft of 3,800 internal code repositories, highlighting a worrying decline in the platform's security posture and engineering oversight.
The internal environment at GitHub has become increasingly fractured following the departure of CEO Thomas Dohmke in the summer of 2025. In a significant organizational shift, Microsoft chose not to appoint a successor, instead placing GitHub's leadership team under the "CoreAI" division. This unit is led by Jay Parikh, a former Meta engineering executive recruited by Satya Nadella to spearhead Microsoft's broad AI transformation. Parikh’s decision to dissolve the independent CEO role has been met with significant internal friction and skepticism.
This structural overhaul has triggered a massive talent drain. Scores of employees have reportedly followed Dohmke to his new startup, Entire, while top executives like SVP Jared Palmer and former CRO Elizabeth Pemmerl have also exited the company. Current and former employees express a grim outlook, suggesting that GitHub is now "dead in name only," with its unique culture being fully assimilated into Microsoft's corporate infrastructure.
