Samsung is increasingly embedding artificial intelligence into its range of home appliances, from refrigerators to ovens, aiming to establish them as intuitive AI companions. The tech giant is introducing a new suite of AI features designed to enhance user interaction and streamline daily tasks.
A prime example is Samsung's updated AI-powered Bespoke AI Family Hub refrigerator, initially showcased at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES). This advanced appliance leverages AI-powered cameras and a large language model through its "Vision AI" technology to automatically identify and track food items within the fridge. This capability ensures users don't have to manually monitor their inventory.
Beyond identification, the new AI features enable the refrigerator to recognize voice commands, suggest recipes tailored to the available ingredients, and seamlessly update a user's Instacart shopping list with any missing components. The system allows specific items, like a can of Coke, to be identified and displayed in a companion smartphone app, offering real-time inventory checks even when users are out grocery shopping.
According to Michael McDermott, executive vice president of consumer electronics at Samsung, the Vision AI technology is central to capturing fridge contents automatically. Many of these sophisticated AI functionalities integrated into the Bespoke AI Family Hub are powered by Google Gemini, highlighting a significant partnership in bringing advanced AI to consumer electronics.
