On May 1, 2026, the Pentagon officially announced that it has entered into agreements with seven leading artificial intelligence companies to deploy their advanced AI technologies into the U.S. Department of Defense's classified networks.
The selected technology giants for this strategic initiative include SpaceX, OpenAI, Google, graphics processing unit (GPU) leader Nvidia, Reflection, software and cloud computing powerhouse Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services (AWS). These companies are poised to deliver diverse AI capabilities aimed at enhancing national security and modernizing defense systems.
However, a notable exclusion from this significant partnership is the prominent AI startup Anthropic. The Pentagon indicated that Anthropic was not selected primarily due to controversies surrounding its security restrictions. This decision underscores the paramount importance of security and compliance in the defense sector's adoption of emerging AI technologies.
