OpenAI CFO Teases Jony Ive-Designed AI Hardware Launching by Year-End

OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar recently teased that the company's highly anticipated and closely-guarded AI hardware device feels "very natural" and "very lovable." Speaking at the "All-In Podcast" team's Liquity Summit in California, Friar shared her firsthand experience using the prototype, noting how difficult it is to describe the unique physical reaction it evokes.

When pressed by co-hosts on whether the Jony Ive-designed device is indeed an earpiece, Friar joked about the legendary iPhone designer's strict confidentiality. "If I tell you it's an earpiece, Jony will come and steal my teenage son," Friar quipped. "I might give him to him." She further praised the hardware's emotional appeal: "What Jony and his team are really good at is bringing humanity to devices. When you see it, you feel it."

While OpenAI has kept concrete details under wraps, causing rampant online speculation, the timeline is becoming clearer. Friar confirmed that she has already tested the device and that OpenAI plans to unveil it "by the end of this year." This represents a potential acceleration in their roadmap, as a previous legal filing indicated shipping might not begin until February 2027.

The device is the product of a massive collaboration. In May 2025, OpenAI acquired Jony Ive's AI hardware startup, IO, for approximately $6.5 billion, with CEO Sam Altman and Ive announcing plans for a "family of AI products." Friar emphasized that the goal of their design philosophy is to make complex technology disappear. "Technology can be very mechanistic, but we all know great design just makes everything fade away," she said, adding that "the simple is hard." Altman has previously ruled out the device being a smartphone, hinting at a paradigm shift in form factor.

[AgentUpdate Depth Analysis] OpenAI’s aggressive push into hardware through Jony Ive’s startup acquisition underscores a critical shift in the AI Agent ecosystem: the transition from software-bound chatbots to ambient, physical companions. Current AI Agents are bottlenecked by existing smartphone and PC interfaces. By decoupling AI from standard screens, OpenAI aims to establish a direct, real-time sensory pipeline. An ultra-natural, screenless interface leverages multimodal inputs (voice, vision, environmental context) to allow agents to act proactively rather than reactively. While prior attempts like Humane AI Pin struggled, OpenAI's massive compute backing, coupled with Ive’s unmatched talent for sensory product design, could set the definitive standard for "Ambient Intelligence" hardware, moving us closer to an era of truly ubiquitous, zero-friction agentic assistance.
