Google has officially announced a sweeping range of features coming to Android phones this year during its livestreamed “Android Show” event. The updates center on the new Gemini Intelligence AI system and tools designed to enhance productivity and focus. These free upgrades are scheduled to roll out in waves over the next year for high-end Samsung and Pixel devices, covering both new and existing models. Google also teased a new lineup of laptops arriving this autumn.
Gemini Intelligence represents a significant evolution, combining Google’s flagship AI tools into a proactive system aimed at task automation. It can directly interact with apps on a phone to perform complex workflows: selecting and ordering a takeaway, converting a grocery list into a ready-to-deliver shopping basket, or identifying a book list from an email and purchasing the correct texts. Gemini will queue these actions for a final user confirmation before completion.
Starting late June, Chrome auto browse will extend these automated powers to the web, assisting with ticket bookings and locating parking spots. The system’s Autofill is also receiving an upgrade to handle complex forms by pulling data across various apps and services. Furthermore, generative user interfaces will allow users to build home screen widgets through natural language prompts, such as requesting localized event lists or specific weather conditions for cycling routes.
Gboard’s dictation system is receiving an AI upgrade called Rambler. This feature edits speech into concise sentences in real-time, stripping away redundant words and speech errors like “umms” and “errs,” while supporting multi-language switching mid-dictation.
To combat digital distraction, Google introduced “Pause Point.” When a user opens an app flagged as distracting, the tool prompts them with breathing exercises, personal photos, or suggestions for more productive apps. Enhanced app timers have also been integrated to curb “doom scrolling.”
Google is also expanding Quick Share compatibility. Previously focused on Pixel, it will now reach devices from Samsung, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Honor. Quick Share will also facilitate file sharing with Apple devices via QR codes, the cloud, or integrated third-party apps like WhatsApp.
Instagram on Android is gaining professional-grade on-device editing tools, including smart enhancement and a sound separation tool for removing background noise. The app will also support Ultra HDR capture, video stabilization, and Night Sight integration. Lastly, the new “Screen Reactions” feature allows for simultaneous recording of the user’s camera and screen to streamline the creation of reaction videos for social media.
