Google recently announced the rollout of its Gemini AI assistant to cars equipped with Google built-in, marking a significant upgrade from the existing Google Assistant. This move underscores Google’s commitment to integrating more advanced, conversational AI into the driving experience.
This announcement follows General Motors' prior disclosure that Gemini would arrive in approximately 4 million vehicles from model year 2022 and newer, across brands like Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC. However, Google’s latest statement did not name specific automakers, suggesting broader availability beyond GM vehicles.
The deployment will commence in the U.S. with English-language support, with expansion to other regions and languages slated for the coming months. Notably, Gemini will be available not only for new vehicles but also for compatible existing cars through software updates.
Vehicles with Google built-in first launched in 2020. According to Google, the new Gemini update facilitates a more natural, conversational interaction between drivers and their vehicles.
Drivers will soon be able to speak more freely to accomplish tasks, explore ideas, or retrieve information. For example, a driver could request a highly rated sit-down restaurant with outdoor seating along their route for lunch. Gemini can leverage Google Maps data for relevant suggestions, then handle follow-up inquiries such as parking availability, menu options, or dietary preferences.
Beyond navigation and dining, Gemini can also perform tasks like activating the heater, providing directions, recommending music, accessing vehicle information, summarizing incoming messages, and assisting drivers with hands-free responses.
Additionally, Gemini Live, currently in beta, offers more open-ended, real-time conversations. Drivers can activate it by tapping an interface button or by saying, “Hey Google, let’s talk,” enabling activities like brainstorming, learning, or general discussions while on the road.
Drivers with Google accounts signed into compatible vehicles will be prompted with the option to upgrade. Once enabled, Gemini can be accessed through voice commands, the on-screen microphone, or steering wheel controls.
Google plans to expand Gemini support to additional languages and regions. Future updates are also anticipated to deepen its integration with other Google services such as Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Home.
